Resolves Conflict Effectively

Healthy communication also fosters a safe platform to resolve issues in a more constructive manner. It allows you and your partner to discuss concerns calmly, trying to understand each other’s viewpoint, and find a common ground that both agree with; maintaining the harmony of your relationship.

Enhances Relationship Satisfaction

Effective communication promotes higher relationship satisfaction. Being transparent about goals, desires, shortcomings and grievances ensures that both partners’ needs are met; leading to a more peaceful and fulfilling relationship.

Tips to Healthy Communication Pattern

Below are several tips that can help you improve your communication style with your partner:

Active listening
Effective Communication

Focusing on what your partner is speaking is the first step towards effective communication. Issues arise when we listen to reply but not to understand. It is essential to maintain eye contact and display body language that you are genuinely listening to what your partner is communicating to build a healthy relationship. It is also necessary to avoid interrupting your partner while they are expressing themselves to reassure them their feelings and issues are genuinely listened to before replying.

Avoiding Assumptions

Assumptions; gradually destroy any relationships. It is essential to clarify your understanding of something concerning your partner with them before jumping to conclusions. Assuming before clarifying might hurt your partner's feelings as they may feel misunderstood. It is always better, to be honest, and ask clarifying questions to understand your partner's feelings and thoughts correctly rather than hurting their feelings through assumptions.

Express Clearly & Honestly

Expressing yourself clearly and honestly is as crucial as avoiding assumptions during communication with your partner. It is better to communicate your needs, feelings, and thoughts clearly with your partner rather than expecting them to understand the unsaid or find the hidden meaning behind your words and actions. Sometimes your partner might need you to be clear rather than talking in riddles. Thus, rather than pushing your expectations on them, it is better to be open, clear and honest in regard to your communication with your partner.

Practising Continuous Learning

Building effective communication with your partner is a continuous learning process. Putting yourself in your partner’s shoes to understand their perspective and emotions better is crucial, which would further avoid miscommunications. Communication is not only limited to verbal but also non-verbal. Practice paying attention to your partner’s expressions, tone, and body language to be more mindful of the communication. For instance, if your partner has a rigid posture, it is better to comfort them first before communicating what is affecting them. Furthermore, it is okay if you could agree with your partner as long as you express it healthily.

If you feel that you and your partner are struggling to practice healthy communication despite trying your best, it is recommended to seek the assistance of a couple therapist for further assistance. Through therapy, you can explore and discover the triggers and possible causes that limit your communication with your partner and explore potential solutions to improve your communication style.
