Anxiety: Morning Rituals

Anxiety; an unpredictable emotion that barges in when you least expect it to. Do you ever wake up feeling restless or overwhelmed before your day even begins? When anxiety greets you first thing in the morning, it can set the tone of your day. But here’s the good news: the way you start your morning can change how you feel for the rest of the day. By creating small and gentle rituals, you can give yourself a sense of calm and control before starting the day.

Here are a few morning practices to try:

1. Begin with gratitude
Instead of reaching and scrolling through your phone the moment you wake up, pause. Take a moment to breathe and think of three things you are grateful for. They don’t have to be big; it can be as simple as the comfort of your bed, a person you love or even the air you are breathing for today. Gratitude changes your focus from what feels heavy to what feels grounding.
2. Ground yourself through breathing
Find a comfortable position, close your eyes and take five minutes just for your breath. Inhale slowly, hold for a moment and exhale gently. Deep breathing helps clear the mind and signals your body that it’s safe to slow down. It’s not about doing it perfectly, but about giving yourself a moment to be present.
3. Move gently
Your body holds tension from stress and emotions, especially after a restless night. Try some light stretching, a short walk around your room, or simply rolling your shoulders. Gentle movement wakes up your body, releases distorted emotions or tension and reminds you that you’re connected to yourself.

4. Practice positive affirmations
Before stepping into the day, give yourself a moment of kindness. Repeat a simple affirmation like:
- “It’s okay if I don’t get everything perfect today.”
- “I’ll try my best and that’s enough.”
- “It’s okay to make mistakes.”
- “I deserve peace today.”
By using affirmations, you replace harsh inner thoughts with words that bring you comfort, acceptance and care.
