As you delve into these thoughts, an endless number of questions might come up, making you think about your relationship journey. You may often hear about red flags – those warning signs that alert you to potential issues in a relationship. However, can you spot any green flags – positive signs that signify a healthy relationship? What is Relationship “Green Flags”?

The word "green flag" is used symbolically in a relationship where it indicates favourable signals that point to a positive and healthy dynamic between partners. It contradicts "red flags," which serve as warning signs that the relationship is heading unhealthily. Green flags are behaviours, attitudes, or characteristics of a relationship that are considered favourable and promising. Identifying and knowing these green flags helps you navigate your relationships more confidently and build lasting bonds with your partner.

5 Green Flags to Look Out for In a Relationship
1. Effective Communication

Communication is the heart of any relationship. It helps you to be more open towards your partner. It also helps you to discover the unexplored parts of your partner through healthy conversations.

Have a Genuine and Open Communication

To be able to share your views and feelings comfortably without the fear of judgement.

Be an Active Listener

Give your undivided attention when your partner is conversing to show that you value your partner.

Effective Conflict Resolution

To work alongside on alternatives and compromises without blaming your partner.

2. Healthy Space

It is important to provide your partner with space when needed. It helps them to calm themselves and process their emotions. Being able to respect each other's individuality, autonomy, and boundaries can ultimately strengthen your bond with your partner.

Healthy Boundaries and Space

To understand and establish clear boundaries with your partner to maintain a balance between intimacy and independence.

Recognise Your Partner’s Differences

Practice understanding and appreciating your partner’s differences.

Be Each Other’s Supporter

Learn to be the cheerleader for your partner by offering words of encouragement and support in pursuit of their goals and dreams.

3. Understanding

Understanding is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Cracks in these foundations may shake the relationship dynamics. It is important to understand your partner instead of reacting first.

Empathy

Learn to recognise and express your and your partner’s emotions, especially during times of distress.

Empowerment

4. Healthy Conflict Resolution

Many of us are wired in a way that we tend to manage conflict through anger or avoidance, leading to suppressed emotions. When conflicts are managed through communication and understanding, you can avoid having emotional outbursts towards your partner.

Use “I” Statements

Express your feelings and experiences using "I" statements rather than making accusatory remarks. For example, say "I feel hurt when..." instead of "You always..."

Stay Calm and Respectful

Try to maintain a calm attitude and speak respectfully, even if your emotions are running high. Try to avoid using abusive language regardless of heated moments.

Adopt an Open-Minded Attitude

Instead of dwelling on past conflicts, try to focus on finding mutually acceptable solutions to the issues. Work as a team and be open to compromise. Be able to compromise and cooperate when tackling issues; choose a middle ground rather than insisting on your approach.

5. Emotional Intimacy

Emotional intimacy is the glue that binds you and your partner together. Being intimate in a deeper than physical manner is a sign of a healthy relationship. Cultivating this connection fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for one another.

Be Affectionate

Learn to express your love and affection to your partner through words, gestures, or physical touch. Even simple gestures like exchanging smiles and hugs are affectionate enough to strengthen your emotional connection.

Be Each Other’s Emotional Support

Venture to express your and your partner's feelings without being feared.

Equality in Relationship

Learn to share each other's romantic and emotional needs to increase mutual fulfilment.
