The Battle of Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy
The Battle of Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy
Written By: Kelly Chan Jia Li, Clinical Psychologist (MAHPC(CP)00353)
We often come across various therapeutic approaches such as psychotherapy and hypnotherapy to address emotional and psychological challenges. Most of you will think of therapy as having a sleeping couch or a therapist swinging their pocket watch in the session. Often, the image of therapy depicted by media is not that accurate, which blurs the individuals’ understanding of therapeutic approaches, mainly psychotherapy and hypnotherapy. We'll discuss these therapeutic modalities (i.e., psychotherapy, hypnotherapy), their effectiveness, and provide suggestions on selecting the right one for your needs.
What Psychotherapy Really Is?
Psychotherapy, often known as “talk therapy,” is a widely recognized form of psychological treatment. The primary focus of psychotherapy is on gaining insight, understanding, and personal growth through these therapeutic dialogues. Psychotherapy sessions typically involve discussions between a therapist and a client to understand the client’s concerns. The therapist will then assist you in addressing the problems or issues by providing guidance and support. Psychotherapy sessions are typically conducted by mental health professionals, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, or counsellors.
In psychotherapy, the therapist plays the role of a facilitator by providing a safe and supportive environment for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. They may use various therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, or humanistic therapy, to help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and make positive changes in your life. Each type of psychotherapy focuses on different techniques and principles tailored to the client’s specific needs.
Is Psychotherapy Effective?
Psychotherapy has been vigorously researched and is considered to be highly effective for a wide range of mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychotherapy also helps to cope with specific life challenges such as going through divorce, loneliness or experiencing major life transitions. Through a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, clients can learn to manage their symptoms, develop adaptive coping strategies, and gain a deeper understanding of the connection between their emotions, thoughts and behaviours.
What Hypnotherapy Really Is?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that utilises hypnosis to create a state of deep relaxation and heightened suggestibility. This altered state of consciousness allows individuals to access their subconscious mind. This altered state of consciousness allows a trained hypnotherapist to work directly with your subconscious. During this process, the hypnotherapist can suggest positive changes, help you confront fears, or modify unhelpful thought patterns. Hypnotherapy can treat a variety of concerns including stress, phobias, smoking cessation, and weight management.
During a hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist encourages the client to focus on inward attention, facilitating easier access to their subconscious mind. This is where beliefs and behavioural patterns are often deeply rooted, making it an ideal place for therapeutic intervention. The hypnotherapist takes a more active role, guiding you into the hypnotic state and using suggestive techniques to work with your subconscious mind.
Is Hypnotherapy Effective?
Hypnotherapy has shown promising results for many individuals, particularly in areas where subconscious beliefs or habits play a significant role in their challenges. Its effectiveness can be influenced by the client's openness and the hypnotherapist's skill. While some experience significant changes, others might not respond as well or may need additional sessions to achieve their desired outcomes.
So, Which Approach to Choose?: Choosing the Right Approach
Before choosing a therapy, it is important to consider the nature of your problems. Psychotherapy better fits you if you want to understand and manage your thoughts, feelings, or behaviours. However, if your issue involves deep-rooted habits or beliefs, hypnotherapy may be more effective in this case. Think about your comfort level and personal preferences. Some individuals may feel more comfortable with talk therapy, while others might be open to exploring the benefits of hypnotherapy.

It's crucial to ensure that your therapist or hypnotherapist has the qualifications, experience, and skills needed in the modality you're interested in. A well-trained professional can make a significant difference in the success of your treatment. It is also essential to define your goals and expectations for therapy clearly.
What is the Verdict?
Both psychotherapy and hypnotherapy offer valuable therapeutic techniques in the realm of mental health and personal growth. The choice between these two approaches depends on the nature of your problems, your personal preferences, the expertise of the therapist or hypnotherapist, and your goals for the therapy. There is no single therapy that is universally superior to another. Instead, treatment is about finding the right fit to cater to your needs. So, whether you choose to engage in talking therapy with a psychotherapist or explore the depths of your subconscious mind through hypnotherapy, the main goal is to improve your mental and emotional well-being and embark on a path to positive change.
