When kids don\u2019t feel they can be real, they may become anxious, depressed, or disconnected (McWilliams, 1994).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">So, how do we help children become their authentic selves? They thrive when they feel safe. Safe to mess up. Safe to feel big emotions. Safe to explore.<\/p><p>Psychologist Carl Rogers, one of the pioneers of humanistic psychology, believed that unconditional positive regard, with acts of loving and accepting someone no matter what is the foundation of personal growth (Rogers, 1951). It means giving them clear boundaries and emotional safety. A child can hear \u201cNo, you can\u2019t do that\u201d and still feel secure if the tone is warm and respectful. In fact, many don\u2019t because they haven\u2019t been taught.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 41%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Teaching emotional literacy is a game-changer. Start simple. Name feelings when they show up. For example, \u201cYou seem frustrated that your tower fell\u201d, or \u201cIt looks like you\u2019re proud of that drawing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Research shows that labelling emotions accurately helps kids regulate those emotions and reduces outbursts, anxiety, and even physical illness (Frydenberg, 2020). It also strengthens their sense of self. Or encouraging a high-energy kid to channel that energy constructively instead of demanding they \u201csit still.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div><p>Support their quirks. Give them freedom to explore interests that are not what you would pick. Maybe you dreamed of a soccer star, but your kid loves coding or painting. It means being real about your own humanity. Ask for their opinion when making family decisions.
