Not just a little annoyed but really off. Your chest is tight, your mind\u2019s racing, and you just want to talk about it. You try to explain what\u2019s going on inside you to your partner, hoping for support or comfort. But what happens next is a classic emotional mismatch where your partner listens\u2026 and then say something like: \u201cThat\u2019s rough. You\u2019ll be alright though.\u201d<\/p><p>And that\u2019s it.<\/p><p>Now you\u2019re even more upset. Not just because of what\u2019s bothering you but because you feel totally misunderstood. You were hoping for connection. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p><\/p><p>Basically, it\u2019s the words we use to talk about how we feel. Some people are great at this. They can say things like, \u201cI\u2019m feeling anxious because I don\u2019t feel in control,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not mad, I\u2019m just feeling really disappointed.\u201d<\/p><p>They know what\u2019s going on inside them and can explain it. That\u2019s a solid emotional vocabulary.<\/p><p>Then there are others who don\u2019t have those words. They might just say something like \u201cI don\u2019t know, I\u2019m fine\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m just tired\u201d or even \u201cCan we not talk about this right now?\u201d. This occurs not because these people don\u2019t care. But because they honestly don\u2019t know how to put their feelings into words. You\u2019re the one:<\/p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; bringing stuff up,<\/p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; trying to resolve conflict,<\/p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; expressing your needs,<\/p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; calming things down,<\/p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; creating closeness.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, your partner seems to float above it all \u2013 barely engaging, rarely initiating. That gets exhausting. You might even start thinking, \u201cIf I stopped trying, would anything ever get better around here?\u201d The truth is, your partner might not even see all the emotional work you\u2019re doing. But it doesn\u2019t land right. Because in that moment, you don\u2019t need advice. It\u2019s something we learn. Some of us grew up in homes where people talked about how they felt. There were words for sadness, anger, shame, joy, all of it.<\/p><p>Others grew up in homes where feelings were shut down. And unless someone later learns a different way through therapy, books, self-reflection, they might not have the tools to talk about their emotions, or handle someone else\u2019s.<\/p><p>So if your partner struggles here, it\u2019s not because they\u2019re broken.
