class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><p>Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder that can cause significant social, communication and behavioural challenges. It\u2019s called a \u201cspectrum\u201d because the symptoms range from mild to severe. Individuals with ASD can see, hear, and feel the world differently from other people. <\/p><\/div><\/div><p>ASD is not an illness or disease and cannot be cured. ASD is a life-long condition, but with appropriate and tailored support, children and adults with ASD can make significant progress and live fulfilling lives. The diagnosis of ASD can only be made by a child psychiatrist or psychologist. Sometimes, the symptoms of ASD become noticeable when a child is between 2 and 3 years old. The social communication and functional deficits related to ASD become more pronounced when the child begins school.<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_ASD\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of ASD<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><p>Individuals with ASD might show a variety of symptoms, such as:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Difficulty with social interactions (e.g., not making eye contact, not responding to their name)<\/li>\n\n<li>Trouble appreciating their own <a href=\"https:\/\/soulmechanicstherapy.com\/zh\/stuffed-toys-from-childhood-companions-to-emotional-guardians\/\">emotions<\/a> as well as others\u2019 emotions<\/li>\n\n<li>Repetitive behaviours (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking)<\/li>\n\n<li>Difficulty understanding social cues and body language<\/li>\n\n<li>Delayed speech development or difficulty communicating effectively<\/li>\n\n<li>Intense focus on specific interests (e.g., knowing everything about trains)<\/li>\n\n<li>Sensitivity to sensory inputs (e.g., being overwhelmed by loud noises or bright lights)<\/li><\/ul><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Down_Syndrome\"><\/span><strong>What is Down Syndrome?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><p>Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Chromosomes are small \u2018packages\u2019 of genes in the body. This extra copy changes how the baby\u2019s body and brain develop, which can cause mental and physical challenges for the baby.<\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Down_Syndrome\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of Down Syndrome<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><p>Individuals with Down Syndrome often have distinct physical features and developmental delays, such as:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Delayed developmental milestones (e.g.,crawling, walking, talking)<\/li>\n\n<li>Cognitive delays (e.g., slower learning, trouble with abstract thinking)<\/li>\n\n<li>A flat facial profile<\/li>\n\n<li>Upward slanting eyelids<\/li>\n\n<li>Small ears and mouth<\/li>\n\n<li>Short stature<\/li>\n\n<li>Hypotonia (poor muscle tone)<\/li>\n\n<li>Gastrointestinal problems (e.g., constipation or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD))<\/li><\/ul><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Down_Syndrome\"><\/span><strong>Types of Down Syndrome<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trisomy_21\"><\/span><em>Trisomy 21<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6><p>Trisomy 21 is the most common type of Down Syndrome, accounting for about 95% of cases. In this type, every cell in the body has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two.<\/p><h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Translocation_Down_Syndrome\"><\/span><em>Translocation Down Syndrome<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6><p>Translocation Down Syndrome accounts for about 3-4% of all Down Syndrome cases. This type occurs when an extra part or a whole extra chromosome 21 is attached to another chromosome.<\/p><h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mosaic_Down_syndrome\"><\/span><em>Mosaic Down syndrome<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6><p>Mosaic Down Syndrome is the rarest type, occurring in about 1-2% of Down Syndrome cases. In this type, only some of the body\u2019s cells have the extra chromosome 21, while others have the typical two copies. Children with Mosaic Down syndrome may have the same features as other children with Down syndrome.
